And some good news!

Orkney MP campaigning for death row man

Orkney MP, Alistair Carmichael, is visiting Tokyo this week, to campaign with Amnesty International in highlighting the case of a man on death row.

The man, Hakamada Iwao, has been in custody for almost 43 years, including 29 years in solitary confinement on death row.

While in Japan, Mr Carmichael is meeting with Judge Kumamoto Norimichi, Mr Iwao's sister, lawyers, politicians and justice department officials, to talk about Mr Iwao's case.

Mr Carmichael said: "I have been involved in a number of death penalty cases over the years. I have never, however, known one where one of the trial judges has been prepared to state publicly that he believed the accused to be innocent."
